Ok. i have a direct debit set up with swinton for my car insurance every 26th of the month. This december I got paid on the 18th and i have left no money in there for my direct debit to come out when they took it out on 29th decemeber. At age 36 in a blue-collar job (i.e. chance of disability over 90 days less than 10%), I'm thinking it may make more sense to get long-term care insurance rather than long-term disability. I bring in 30% of our household income. If I become disabled, I count for very little of our total spend (obviously food, but I wouldn't be doing much in the way of leisure / entertainment), but the added costs of caring for me would be too much for our budget to bear. I also think it would be very hard to qualify for disability for class 1 (a desk job sitting in front of a computer all day). It seems like it would be easier to qualify for two functions of daily living. I know they technically cover two different scenarios, but isn't there a lot of overlap here in terms of when you would actually get a pay out? Just trying to understand. I worked 33 yrs at McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) Aircraft Corporation and retired in 1996. I received a fair pension and insurance that I had to pay, which was affordable. I'm a cross-country runner for my HS, I plan on doing a hospital volunteer program, I am in my HS's Mock Trial team. So, I would be out and about for most of the week going to different activities. Speaking of which, my brother has a car because he goes to a community college (and for that reason, he is mature?). Now the problem: my dad feels that I am too young for a car and does not feel that I am responsible and mature enough to handle one alone without supervision. My mom is willing to buy a car for me, with a reasonable price range. But my dad does not want to pay for car insurance. My parents are divorced, and I do most of the communication between them, especially when it comes down to needing money. I have brought up the aspect of working part-time. But my parents tell me that I should focus on school. My dad tells me I should focus on school instead of a car, but I need that car so I can get to where I need to be. Okay, I'm sixteen years old (turning seventeen on July) and I have my provisional driver's license already. I don't have a car so I use my parents' when I drive. They don't let me drive alone because I'm not part of the car insurance. My question is: do I need to be part of the insurance coverage that we currently have for our car to be able to legally drive alone, even though I don't own it? Why do insurance companies hate performance/modified cars?

It seems like the ideal insurance company wants you to drive a safe and slow bumper car and have absolutely no fun driving to and from wherever you are going. They assume that any sports car or car with performance enhancements means you will crash. It means you are a reckless driver and no good to the general public. It means you will blatantly violate the rules of the road and have no remorse for doing it. All of that is a load of crap... Most of the major car companies don't even offer, when getting a free quote, to see Ferrari's or Lamborghinis prices, they just won't insure them! Your expected to report any and all modifications to the company so they can jack up the premium. So why do they hate those types of cars so much?

I have moved back to the UK after living in Italy for 30 years. Why are my car insurance quotes so high?

I passed my driving test in 1979 and received a full UK licence. After moving to Italy I had to convert to an Italian licence as I was resident there. I moved back to the UK in August, converted my licence back to a full UK and have been trying to find insurance at a reasonable price. My problem seems to be that I appear as having passed my test in August 2012 and my no claims bonus from Italy is not valid for UK insurers. First of all is this possible and do you think there's some way my driving experience and clean licence and insurance in Italy can be brought into play as I negotiate a new policy here?
